Traditionally, the parents of the groom pay for the rehearsal dinner, but now a days, it’s whatever you agree on. If you’re doing things traditionally, and your parents are paying for the reception, then ask his parents if they can pay, or at least contribute.
Who is invited? Of course everyone in the bridal party. If they are married, then their spouse is invited as well. If they live in town, and are dating someone, then it’s a nice gesture to invite the significant other, however not required. If they are from out of town and they came with a date, then you have to invite the date. Parents, siblings and grandparents are also invited. Formal etiquette says you should also invite all out of town guests, if they are already in town at the time of the RD. According to the etiquette books, it’s rude to expect people to travel, and then not invite them to the pre-wedding festivities. Most people these days do not do this, because it’s expensive.
My husband and I paid for it ourselves, but we only had family and close friends at our wedding, and almost everyone was from out of town. We had 50 people at our RD and 78 at the reception! When my stepdaughter got married, she had her RD at a pizza place because she also had a ton of out of town guests, and wanted to do something cheap so they could afford to invite everyone. I think there was 50-60 people also.
