Interesting History Of Ballet Dancing
Ballet is a performance dance style that originated in Italy developed in the 15th century and moved across Russia and France, and very recently to the United States. Ballet developed in renaissance court in Italy, where aristocratic weddings are celebrated very lavishly, also dancers and court musicians entertain the gathered people. Ballet became more advanced by the French ballet de cour that included other entertainment such as verse, music, pageant, speech, song, costume, and décor. On those days, choreography was also done on formal dance steps and dancers dressed according to their fashion with respect to their countries culture.
One of the well-known dance master at that time was Domenico da Piacenza, and he started teaching for other people along with his students Guglielmo Ebreo and Antonio Cornazzano. Later in the 17th century, ballet developed more of performance based dance style during the reign of Louis XIV which had more of improved dance standards. The five basic ballet dance positions started in the writings of the Pierre Beauchamp, who was a ballet dancer and a choreographer. Jean-Baptiste Lully was the first person who brought French and Italian ballet together and formed a legacy of future ballet. The first ballet school was started in France and Juliette Blanche taught ballet in the school.
In 18th century, ballet moves improved a lot and became more of serious dramatic performance. During this period, dancers’ movement became more advanced to exhibit character and mostly, women played only secondary dancers. The dancers wore hoops, wigs, corsets, and big heels and composers like Christoph Gluck made reform in dance composition. Only during this period, ballet got divided into three methods namely demi-caractère, sérieux, and comique. In the early 19th century, great social change happened, which also brought changes in the ballet and dance movements became more romantic.
Ballet dance became more popular in Russia and Denmark during 19th century and short skirt or tutu became more famous in this period. Ballet became more precise and perfect by the dancer Agrippina Vaganova, who also became the head of Vaganova Ballet Academy. In America, ballet created a stronger influence and George Balanchine developed a new method called state-of-the-art in America, also opened a school in New York. Also, Balanchine modified the narrative tradition of ballet dance and developed more of plot kind of style. Barbara Karinska developed bias cut in the short skirt or tutus along with embroidery, appliqué, beadwork, and crochet.
