Wedding Speech Usher

Does the brother of the bride have to make a wedding speech?

Or just a brief toast? How long should he speak for?

My husband is wondering what will be expected of him at his sister’s wedding. They aren’t very close, but friendly enough. He will be an usher, and doesn’t want to do the wrong thing by saying too much/too little.
What is the etiquette?
We live in the USA and his sister is in the UK, which is why he’s not more involved with the wedding.
We are flying over for it.

Typically, the only ones to actually make a speech from within the bridal party are the best man and the maid of honor. If the others in the bridal party do wish to make a speech, they can do so, but it’s not usually required.

If he wants to say something, the best thing to do is a quick recap of a memory of the bride and groom and wish them well – like “I remember when they were first dating, they fought so much I thought they hated each other! Good thing they didn’t though, because they look so much happier now. Best wishes to you guys, love you both!”

Something like that. I’m not exactly a speech writer. >^.^<
