Wedding Speech Tradition

Help with a Speech???

I need to come up with a speech on culture. I have had a few different ideas — like the American wedding traditions, Thailand culture, blah blah — But the example given in class was, of course, wonderfu — It was a speech on the “Dun Dun Drum” also known as the talking drum. We are supposed to find one specific element of a culture and speak about that… I have never been anywhere to have learned about these unique elements, so if there is anyone out there that can please help me generate ideas… I am having a horrible time just getting started.

Thanks so much!!

palaspas is an interesting tradition that takes place in the Philippines. They reenact the journey Christ made culminating in the actual hanging on the cross with nails and stuff. I had seen this live a few times because I lived across the street from where preparations were made for the local event.

I remember the volunteer who walked in Christ’s footsteps had his back sliced with a razor. He had a black cloth over his head with a real crown of thorns. They cut a chicken’s head off and leaked the blood into a bucket. They would dip this whip thing with lots of different strips into it and hit the person’s back. He even dragged the heavy cross all around resting on his shoulder in the blazing heat. At one point he would lay on the cement road with his cuts on his back exposed. At the end of it..he was nailed…some people dont get nailed though..they will tie them up there..it is voluntary. They are not forced to do anything.
It’s an event that is very vivid in my memory. It’s defintely an attention getter for those who haven’t ever heard of such a thing.
