What Are The Dos And Don’ts Of Writing And Delivering Best Man Speechs

We were made to think that writing and delivering best man speechs is hard when actually it is quite easy. When you think about it, it’s just like having a conversation with a small group of friends and families. Everyone in the crowd knows that you have little to no mastery of public speaking and thus are quite tolerable when it comes to imperfections. Nevertheless, our dos and don’ts presented here could help immensely in making you deliver a flawless speech.

Do write the speech in a personal tone, without embarrassing the couple with too personal details. Do make a funny speech, however
. But, don’t make it funny at the expense of the groom. Also, don’t brush on subjects that are touchy in nature as these often create tension. Subjects such as ex-girlfriends and degrading subjects are best left unsaid.

Do come up with a short speech. It is always better to keep the audience wanting than to bore them with a very lengthy speech. Don’t just write a few sentences, though
. Ideally, the length of the speech should be at least 3 minutes to 5 and should have at least one anecdote sandwiched between the first lines, the opening lines, and the final toasts, or the final remarks. Having said that, try to be conscious of the speech’s length.

Do relax before and while you’re at the podium. You can panic afterwards, if you like. But, remember not to drink anything with alcohol for calming your nerves.

Do try to express your gratitude to the parents of the bride and groom in their behalf and don’t forget their names. Also, express your compliments to the bridesmaids who worked alongside you during the wedding preparations. Do thank the guests as well. Consider that the people who attended the wedding took the time get there. So express your gratitude to them. Don’t make this too lengthy though as their attendance is not the subject of your speech.

Do bring with you small cards to help keep your speech on track. You can try memorizing the speech, however, but don’t completely trust your memory. It is still best to have some prompt cards handy to serve as reminders for you in the event that you forget your lines. If somehow you don’t have prompt cards and you forgot some of your lines, don’t panic. Make some adlibs and fillers.

Do prepare your opening lines. The first few lines of your speech are perhaps the most important. These let you capture the audience’s attention, if you fail in here it will be more difficult for you to get their attention as you continue with your speech. To make these lines more effective, stay away from tired lines. As your alternative choices, get some funny one liners and jokes that can get your audience some good laugh.

Do prepare your best man speechs in advance. Even trained speakers have their speeches ready days before they deliver them. Don’t depend on your skills in extemporaneous speaking, even if you are really excellent at it. Instead, take the time to prepare your materials and write your speech to ensure a flawless delivery.
