Best Mans Speeches – Useful Tips For The Best Man
Most guys, when they get invited to act as their friends best man in the wedding says ‘okay’ without a thought. After all, it’s wonderful to hear that your friend is getting married. But, then, a few moments after the reality kicks in. You remember that along that invitation comes the responsibility to write and deliver the best mans speeches. Unless you have received some training in delivering speech, you’ll find this part of the job a bit uninviting. Your nerves would probably raise with the thought of you standing in front of a sea of faces, talking about the bride and groom, and trying not to look as idiotic as you feel. The pointers below in delivering best man speeches were made to help you conquer the nerves.
Try to be sincere and be natural. It is not like you’re in an oration contest and you’re not here to electrify the audience with your speech. During occasions like this and with an audience like your friends, being natural is the best tactic to capture and hold their attention. So try to be as conversational as you can. If you do so, ten to one, you’ll have an excellent delivery, if not a flawless one.
Although many are intimidated by the prospect of addressing people they know, it helps to know for many that this is their comfort zone where honest mistakes are easily forgiven. So abandon all your notions about delivering an electrifying, extravagant speech. In addition, it is nicer to hear a best man who delivers his speech naturally than someone who is stiff and is ready for the state of the nation address.
To read from your notes or not to read from them. You can always have your speech memorized, write key points in point cards, or combine the two together. Chances are, when you rely entirely on your memory you’ll forget some parts of your speech. If you can pull off a memorized speech, well and good, but in any case you should always have some adlibs ready. With that said, it is okay to memorize your speech but what is not okay is to depend entirely on your memory. To ensure that your delivery is smooth, it is recommended to have some small idiot cards handy where parts of your speech are written. On a side note, keep in mind that the introductory lines of your speech need not have a script.
Prepare in advance. Don’t write your speech the night before the wedding or worse on the day of the wedding. Even if you are confident in your skills for delivering an extemporaneous speech, it is still better to have something prepared. This conditions you to become more conversant on the moment you deliver your speech, making the process easier for you and your listeners.
Keep it entertaining and brief. Any speech longer than 5 minutes, unless you have the knack for keeping your audience entertained, is boring. So try to keep your speech brief but very entertaining and to the point.
Keep your head clear. Keep yourself from getting a sip until after you’re done with your speech. Although alcohol can help your nerves, it doesn’t help you with delivering speech.
Bring these pointers with you as you deliver your best mans speeches. Trust us, these could help a lot.
