Wedding Speech Protocol
Advice on a best-man speech?
Exactly one year from now, I am going to be best man at my brother’s wedding. What Iwould like to know is what to put in the speech to make it really good.
I want it to be warm, funny and anecdotal.
What kinds of things do people say?
What are the DOs?
What are the DON’Ts?
What kinds of wedding ‘protocol’ things do you say?
How long should I make it?
Thanks a lot for your suggestions.
Ok, have done same thing in Czech Republic for my bro’, with a one sentence delay for it to be translated.
MUST thank everyone who helped organise and fund the day,
compliment the bride and her maids on how beautiful they look (even if they don’t! hey you may get lucky with one of them out of this!)
DON’T be smutty about the sexual antics of anyone
End by asking everyone to raise their glasses (find someone in audience with specs on, and repeat loudly WINE glasses) in wishing them luck for the future
Tell them something funny that happened involving your bro, exagerate if necessary for comic effect
Say how well your bro has done in finding such a great (look at the bride, long pause) brother-in-law for his wife (adjust tie, look at nails in general self admiration)
You’re basically there to do the expected stufff like complimenting the bride, bridesmaids and caterers, reading out some wedding card greetings, etc but you’re mainly there to educate the audience on what your bro is like (in a good way) no one wants to hear you kiss ass, cos thats boring, they want to hear some funny stuff about what he’s like and things that have happened to him (not too insulting) and always end with positive stuff about what you admire about him and why he’ll be a good husband and son-in-law (her parents are looking for a sound investment from the money they spent on the wedding, and to rest assured their daughter is in good hands)
Sorry to go on, hope this helps
DON’T drink too much beforehand.
Relax and enjoy, don’t worry about how many laughs you’ll get, it’ll be appreciated as long as it’s sincere
Take your time, there’s no rush people will be digesting their meal and won’t be going anywhere for a while
DON’T read from a script, use cue-cards
