Bridegroom Speech – It’s In The Preparations

While delivering speeches at wedding reception has been a tradition for maybe centuries, bridegrooms still don’t seem to get the hang of delivering their own bridegroom speech on the most important day of their lives. No matter how strong your urge not to prepare and deliver a speech on your wedding day, it is still best that you follow what tradtion prescribes.

The good news is, there are a lot of things that can condition you for the delivery of your speech, some of them are briefly discussed below.

Plan ahead – It would do you good if you can jot down the things you would want to say on your speech right after you have decided on the wedding date. The best way to do this is to list down all the important ideas, people and anecdotes that you want to use as materials for your speech. Develop the speech as the day approaches and add details when necessary. This way, you’ll have half the problem solved as you shift your attention to other things.

Even if you feel confident of speaking extemporaneously, your delivery would still be better if you are well prepared.

It’s okay to use prompt cards – You won’t lose your face if you will use some prompt cards so don’t be afraid to prepare some. These cards work well in keeping you reminded with the main highlights of your speech. These still work well even if you already know the content of your speech by heart.

Edit and practice – After finishing your first draft, make some corrections, polish it and practice your delivery. The best and easiest route to perfecting your speech is to put it on paper, for some reason this allows the reader to see the errors in the speech clearer than when reading it on the screen. As you edit, don’t hesitate to slash out entire sections when necessary or replace flowery and formal words with regular English.

After editing, practice how you would deliver your speech. Ask one of your friends to act as an observer and later, ask him to criticize your work. Ask them for their comments and be sure to take note of their observations. If you have no available friend, however, you can practice in front of the mirror. Take note your gestures, your intonation, your facial expression and the general manner you deliver your speech and modify according to what you think is good. Doing these tricks polishes as much as help you prepares you for the big day.

Calm down – Get some rest the night prior to the big day. Sleep away your pre-wedding jitters and anxiety, this could help a lot in making you feel less nervous about your speech. There are plenty of ways to help induce sleep, these include bathing with hot water, drinking some relaxing teas, or performing relaxation exercises. Whichever way you do it, so long as you’re in bed early, it’s good.

Interject a joke or a funny line in your bridegroom speech – Jokes allow you to make your listeners laugh as well as for you to relax. If done in good timing, jokes can have a huge impact on your speech and those who will listen to it.
