Several Wedding Speech Etiquette To Be Observed At Weddings

According to tradition, there are only three wedding speeches. Because of the traditions that have evolved along with these speeches, each of them has wedding speech etiquette which are best observed.

Profanity – Many speakers try to emphasize their speech with profane language. While this may seem like the norm at wedding parties, many wedding guests have a taste for foul words-free speeches. If, as the speaker, you need to use vulgar words when delivering jokes or when driving your key points, it is best to substitute ear-friendly words with very strong words instead. When constructing your speech, consider that you have a diverse audience to address, thus any inappropriate word must be avoided.

Recent death and other sore topics – The wedding reception is an occasion for celebration, thus if it is not necessary to talk about sore topics, refrain from doing so. Unless there is a pressing need to say something about a very recent death, try to avoid mentioning the topic. Out of respect, some people may try to look glum to give comfort to the relatives of the person who just died. Also, refrain from mentioning other sore topics such as divorce, annulment and other sorts of tragedy.

On gums and alcohol – Chewing a gum is a big no-no in formal occasions like weddings. Unless it is integral in your speech, don’t do it. It’s the same thing with alcoholic drinks. Because of their feeling of anxiety, some wedding speakers help themselves with a sip of alcohol. Although this may work for the best man, the groom or the bride’s father before they stand on the podium, it is still not right to slur through the speech.

Very long speeches – Delivering long speeches is never a good idea. Even if you are an entertaining speaker and is capable of pulling off excellent speeches, your audience is not ready to listen to an hour-long speech. So as much as you can, make your speech short. A speech that is only 5-minute long is often ideal. Condense your messages into one concise and coherent speech and make it a point to drive your point without taking too many segues.

Personal relationships – For some reason, speakers at weddings seem to have the need to talk about their own relationships. Although many people do this, it is never proper to mention your own relationships in other people’s weddings.

Jokes that are in bad taste – It is fine to talk about funny experiences, to deliver funny one liners, and to crack jokes at weddings.

However, there are jokes that simply breach wedding speech etiquette. These include jokes of sexual nature, jokes about exs of either the bride or the groom (these can be mentioned if either of them had given the speaker permission), and jokes that uses impolite expressions or slang as these could offend the majority of your listeners. Cracking jokes that refer to these themes, no matter how funny they are, is a big no-no at wedding receptions.
