Wedding Speech Guidelines
I have to write a speech or a toast for my brothers wedding since I’m the best man.?
The thing is, I’m a girl, and his best friend. I haven’t been to a wedding in awhile so I’m not sure how long a toast is supposed to go on for and all that stuff. What are some guidelines I should have?
Try to keep it to about a minute or two. Long speeches are boring.
If you’re not normally a good public speaker, then now is not the time to try and break out some funny jokes or complicated stories. Keep it short, sweet and simple.
Try to avoid inside jokes. A quick one that’ll make him laugh is O.K. if you can slyly slip it into the speech, but the guests will get confused if you go on for five minutes about “the donkey in the basement” and they have no idea what that means.
Keep it clean! I once went to a wedding where the best man’s toast talked about walking in on the couple having sex on their first date, and you could hear a pin drop in the room because everyone was so shocked and embarrassed for them. No stories that’d make Grandma blush, no dirty words, etc.
Just keep it sincere and honest. Something short and heartfelt is better than something long and made-up. Talk about your relationship with him, and try to work the bride in somehow. Maybe something like, “I’ve looked up to my big brother for years, and he’s always been there for me. So I’ve wanted nothing more than to see him happy. And Sally, I can tell that you make him happy because of the smile on his face whenever you’re around. I’m thrilled to have you as a new sister. Cheers!”
