Wedding Schedule Reception
Wedding ceremony length & reception?
On avg what is the length of a traditional wedding. We are both Christian and plan to have Unity Sand (Instead of a Unity Candle).
Also, how long should a reception be. I mean I know it’s up to the person, but how long does a typical reception run?
Also, we are planning on having our wedding around 3 or 4. If it takes about 15-30 minutes for the ceremony, would it be a bad idea to schedule the reception for like 6 or 630? I figured it would be good to give people a chance to find the place (most of our guests are out of towners), pictures to be taken, and if someone wants to go and change before the reception they could do so. Is there anything wrong with that?

Here is what I suggest… most of my ceremonies are 15 minutes or under (I don’t do sermons in my marriage ceremonies — some religions do)
Generally what happens is the wedding happens and then there’s about an hour for the wedding party to take pictures etc — the guests have a cocktail hour at the reception venue. Then the bridal party makes their grand entrance with introductions… then the first dance, dinner, toasts, garter, bouquet, etc… I can look for a little more detailed time lines if you’re interested. If you’re having music and dancing most receptions tend to go about 4 hours — then some places younger people either go out or stay at the venue for an ‘after party’ type visit…. I have also been at receptions that were 6 hours long (reception started at 6 and people left at midnight… but to me that was too long and a lot of people left earlier than that). One factor is whether you and your friends are ‘night owls’ and ‘partiers’…
If you have your wedding at 4, your timing of having cocktail hour at 5 would be good. or even starting it at 6 would give guests a chance to freshen up — i’ve been to a couple of weddings with long times between the ceremony and reception and it wasn’t a big deal.
