Best Man Speech At Wedding – How To Make It The Very Best One

You’re the best man for your best friend and with that comes the privilege to give the “best” best man speech at wedding celebrations.  Your friend’s wedding is in four months.  And you’re not sure speech writing is the best of your abilities.  Enough already with all the “best”.  You are still coming to terms with him getting married and you guys not being able to hang out as you used to, but you also want the guy to be happy and if giving the best speech does the job, you’re up to it.

The next couple of months go by and the speech doesn’t even cross your mind; you’ve got plenty of time left to do it.  One day you hear something about wedding in a conversation and you remember.  You promise yourself to remember, even scribble something into your agenda.  You’re planning on writing one of those funny best man speeches at wedding receptions.  You misplace the agenda.

The next three weeks just seem to fly by and a feeling of pressure is settling in: you do still need to get something written down regarding best man speeches, at wedding receptions they are essential after all.  So you plan on sitting down on Saturday, after breakfast.  Good idea.  On Friday you get a call from your best friend.  He really needs some help with those boxes that still need to go the new apartment.  Sure, you’ll be there at eight the next morning and help out.  There was something you had planned for Saturday, but it couldn’t have been very important since you can’t seem to remember what it was.

Before you know it another week is gone, when picking up the potted palm trees for the reception it hits you right between the eyes: you still don’t have a single syllable for the best speech at weddings.  Now what are you to do?  It’s just a few days left to the wedding.

You don’t dare asking your other friends for advice.  Wouldn’t they have a field day with this?  So you finally get over yourself and go ask your dad.  Of course he’s happy to oblige and gives you enough pointers for three speeches at wedding celebrations.  You scribble them down, turn the page this way and that.  This can’t be that hard, can it now?  Hours later you run out of paper, you’re dazed and you still squat.  You lost the battle and are ready to surrender and wave the white flag.

Ehh, no, not yet.  You remember your mom had a book from way back when that had best man speeches at weddings examples, or was it groom’s?  Who cares?  You go digging for the book and yes, it’s still around and yes the speeches were for the groom.  — If this comes close to describing the last four months of your life, it’s time you made yourself a plan.

When you write best man wedding speeches you need a structure on which to build.  Make a list of the things you like best about your friend and also about the bride.  Also make a short list of a few good anecdotes from stuff you’ve been through together.  Funny is great, icky is to be avoided and always keep the bride’s feelings in mind (and with that also the grooms feelings and dignity).

When composing best man speeches, at wedding celebrations expressing your care for your friend and his bride always goes a long way, so start out shining a bright light on the couple and highlight what makes them the great couple they are.  Then you can do a flash back to when you got to know your friend and dig up some long forgotten anecdotes (again: keep it tasteful and funny).  Then you could go over the first moments in the couple’s relationship from your own perspective (stay with the official version).  Weave in the great things about your friend and also nice details about the bride.        Express your hopes for their future happiness, of which of course you will be an integral part and . . .  close with a witty toast.  Keep it short and too the point and you can’t miss

So here’s one structure you could use.  Fill it in with your experiences and you’ve got yourself a concise and structured speech.  One thing to keep in mind: When doing a best man speech, at wedding receptions never step on the toes of anyone present.  It would pour a bucket of cold water on the celebration and could put a dent into your friendship.  Stay on the bride’s good side and you will pave the way for a long lasting friendship with the both of them.
