On Understanding Autism by Dividing Fact from Fiction
Several misconceptions about autism may hinder people from truly accepting the fact that their child may be autistic. In learning what it’s not, you may be able to gain a deeper insight on what it actually is. Here are four of the most common major stereotypes that many people even believe about autism:
- Autistic people are code-crackers, arithmetic geniuses, or musical virtuosos. Quite the reverse in fact, because most autistic individuals have average to below average aptitudes on skill sets that requires logical reasoning. The truth is that majority of autistic people have regular abilities, while some have slighter than normal skills in math, music, and other areas of intelligence.
- You’ve probably heard of the myth that autistic children don’t grow to be independent adults different from other children their age. Alas, a lot of people give to to this myth and stop on searching for ways to help their autistic child become high functioning individuals. Much of this hindrance is gratuityous as there are many types of therapies based on humanistic therapy that can assist autistic individuals cope better. Humanistic Sandtray Therapy provides clients an active, nonverbal, indirect, and symbolic experience of rediscovering visions, hopes, and dreams.
- The inability to form expressive bonds of any sort to any person is also a myth that lays pessimistic stress on a family that has an autistic member. The truth is that autistic individuals do have the ability to feel friendly towards individuals around them. While they may not be able to relate to the majority of society and may come acroos difficulties in communicating with other people, they are capable of adoring and feeling emotion on the way to the people who surround them everyday. It’s a fact that autistic individuals can actually develop relationships even if with smaller groups of individuals; they are able to form acquaintance, get married, and maintain cheerful relationships.
- It’s also not valid that all autistic individuals are akin to duplicates that experience the same symptoms of the disorder. Autism has other symptoms aside from the most common denominator that autistic individuals share which is the inability to communicate communally. It looks as if that the only widely-shared symptom of autism is the difficulty autistic individuals experience in relating with other people; other symptoms are mixed.
- Autism is a disorder that is mainly characterized by self-absorption, or not have facilities to effectively respond to social interaction which usually appears normally for people. Since initial involvement is important in helping autistic children become a high functioning adult, concentrated methods like play therapy can be very helpful. Play therapy is a motivating kind of therapy where a child is encouraged to play with toys, and the toys are meant to illicit some form of interaction from the child. Autistic children may be encouraged to play games where competitors take rolls, or form puzzles, or imagine different scenarios. With tolerance and expressed effort, parents can employ play therapy to help their child develop into a highly functioning adult.
In most therapy meetings, the therapist parents will work with will propose that parents also learn some of the games that they play so that the parents can play with the child even when to your place; this doesn’t just accelerate the results of the therapy but also promotes a closer bond between parents and children.
