Having consistently reliable DJ equipment can spell the difference between a great performance and an embarrassing flop. DJs must have equipment that they’re comfortable with, that they’re competent on and that they can use dependably.
When a DJ is performing a mixset, he has to be able to use his equipment as a unified musical instrument. For this to occur a DJ must have good quality equipment. Gear does not need to be expensive but make sure that it is definitely reliable.
DJs use a wide variety of electronic equipment in their acts including turntables, CD players, DJ Mixers and MIDI controllers. The most well known DJ tool is the Technics 1200, a long time industry standard. It’s probably one of the first bits of gear you need to get, and you can use it to practice beat mixing, a fundamental DJ skill.
Modern DJs have the luxury of choice and are no longer reliant on just the turntable. The standard today is a combination of CD players, two turntables, a DJ mixer, amplifier, headphones and a good range of leads. For newcomers on a tight budget, the need for a high-priced amp and speaker can be avoided by using the auxillary input from your home stereo.
Getting the right gear
When purchasing DJ equipment, you’ll need to buy the equipment that works best with your performance style. For hip-hop DJs, scratch/battle mixers and direct-drive turntables are a must. For those who mostly play weddings and corporate events, software programs and CD players are the gear you need. Regardless of your style, at some point you’ll need to learn as many equipment types as possible to broaden your range as a DJ, including the newest electronic equipment.
The digital DJ revolution
Most modern DJs use some sort of mixing software. There are a great deal of quality programs for you to choose from including Mixxx, VirtualDJ and Traktor. It is recommended to really get used to one or more of these programs.
When choosing your equipment, make sure it’s compatible with your other equipment and can be easily used alongside your other equipment. Remember to choose something that’s user friendly and makes your live show easier to perform.
Other than your musical knowledge and personal charisma, your equipment is the most important part of your ability to perform as a competent DJ. Pick the right DJ equipment, and the rest will be easy.
