What To Buy For The Newlyweds
Buying wedding gifts always presents emotional hazards. Even when a bride and groom register for possible gifts, we givers are never quite sure we’re getting them the right thing.
You see, our youngest nephew and his longtime girlfriend decided they wanted to get married after they’d finished our local community college. Both of them had been accepted at a four-year school in another state, where they want to finish their bachelor’s degrees, and they simply didn’t want to stay apart any longer.
Since only a few weeks remained before the start of the new academic year, the prospect of a prompt wedding set off a flurry of activity in the family. It was a happy kind of pre-wedding frenzy. After all, the young couple had opted to get married rather than just cohabit, which is something our rather old-fashioned family doesn’t condone. At the same time, we worried that they were getting married very young, and with the burdens of college and making a home for themselves.
Given their situation, we found ourselves faced with a wedding dilemma: We simply couldn’t decide on an appropriate wedding gift.
My husband, in all seriousness, suggested we get them that epiphone electric guitar our nephew once said he wanted. I told him he was being an old fool; the boy had wanted that guitar when he was 16 and was going to run away and join a rock n’ roll band. Now that he was nearly 20 and on the verge of getting married, there must be other more important things they needed.
Then a few days later, we thought we’d heard the bride-to-be expressing a desire for a nice delonghi oven. We thought we had the problem solved until we found out the discussion was with a friend who was getting such an oven for herself.
There were days when we were truly at wit’s end. We thought about towels; too generic. We thought about traditional formal gifts like a glass wedding bowl; not useful for a young married couple still in college. We thought about other linens; practical to be sure, but somehow not romantic enough. We even considered getting them a cuisinart food processor, until we realized that with all their classes and jobs to boot, it was highly unlikely they’d have time, for the present anyway, to concoct any recipes involving a food processor.
Then it hit us: Why not combine something memorable with something practical? At a local gift shop we found a beautiful silver picture frame that could be engraved with the couple’s first names and their wedding date. Then we went round the corner and picked up a gift card for a substantial amount that they could use for housewares once they got settled. We slipped the gift card inside the picture frame and voila! Gift problem solved.
