An Introduction to Wedding Dress Fabrics
Which are the most common fabrics used for wedding garments? Where dresses for women and girls are concerned it is usually satin, silk, tulle and organza. When the focus is strictly the garments meant to be worn by the flower girl the list remains the same, but the major emphasis is on comfort and movement.
Additionally, most manufacturers of children’s dresses understand that even the most fastidious little girl might fall into everyday habits during a wedding day. This tends to mean that garments are made from materials not so easily destroyed by stains, and which are constructed in ways that allow the child to move freely, but without the common-place worries over tearing or ripping as well.
If there is one fabric that appears in great abundance in flower girl dresses it tends to be tulle. This is the fabric used in the manufacturing of ballerina’s tutus and is also the main fabric in the petticoat or crinoline that fills out a skirt too. A large number of modern flower girl dresses also feature decorative layers of tulle used to give a dress a “fairy tale” appearance as well. For instance, a gown in pale green might have a skirt made from a variety of green clusters of tulle that are accented with silk flowers or sequins.
Alternately, the tradition of a flower girl dress looking very similar to the bride’s gown might mean that a bodice of silk that is embroidered with lace is finished with a remarkably full skirt that relies on several outer layers of tulle as well.
The other fabric used to give little girls dresses a very magical look and flowing movement is organza. Whether it peeks out at the hemline or is used to make a tiered skirt that extends to the floor, organza is a magical and sheer fabric that gives a little girl the swirly and “swooshing” sound that makes her dress such a joy to wear.
While silk does appear in many children’s wedding garments it is usually the more durable 100% or Shantung varieties that can stand up to a great deal more wear and tear than traditional formal silks. Additionally, many garments will use a material known as taffeta in place of silk. This gives the shininess of classic silk but is machine washable and far more durable than silk.
