How do wedding cake tastings work?
The bakery we want to use has a long list of the descriptions of their delicious flavors. But when I went to schedule an appointment online, you only get to choose one “tray” with a sample of 5 flavors — and they pick which five you get. None of our top choices for flavors are on either tray.
Is this how it usually works? Do you just sample what they give you and then cross your fingers that the flavor you order will also taste good? Or will they give us another tasting to determine the exact flavor after we’ve committed to hire them?
At the bakery where I work, when someone does a wedding cake tasting we do one of two things: we will make up a tray of cupcake like bites of what ever cake we’ve already made for that day or we will make a sample 6″ round cake in the flavor they think they’d like to try. If someone wants to try a flavor that is not one of our more common we will bake sample cupcakes for them. The bakery you’ve contacted is probably not giving you a choice because they don’t want to do any extra work. My suggestion would be to check other bakeries that will actually have available the flavor you want to try–it’s your wedding cake for goodness sake!!!
