Fighting Fire With Fire: The Royal Wedding
2011 will be the year of marriages. Now there are two weddings, 2011 will be as good a year as any for the true blue bloods to show their colours by getting in on the act. They’ll also inspire the rest of us to devise elaborate ways of getting the family as far away from that particular circus. By playing your own wedding off against the Westminster ceremony, you can really whittle down the numbers of genuinely worthy at your own. Or better still, beat the upper crust at their own game. Start with a stunning Castle weddingvenue, dress or whatever else you can afford. We may be talking about a royal wedding here, but really, most of us can out romance a couple who met in Art History lectures.
When you want to outgun a royal wedding, the weapons at your disposable are extravagance and kitsch. First step will be the aforementioned venue. By birthright the venue of the wedding has been fixed for Westminster Abbey. You may have the sameprivilegeif you’re aresidentof the Abbey’s precincts, or a child of a member of the Order of the Bath (a Knight or Dame). Oh, and if you are yourself a Knight or Dame or a member of the royal family. You’re reading this so you aren’t. Essentially, that’s almost nobody, but we’re upstaging and not emulating! Get yourself booked for superior castle weddings if your wedding needs the same historical edge. Is it not far easier to go kitsch? The world’s fairytale princess-brides converge on the campy Mecca that is Disney World. You’d be forgiven for imagining that Kevin Jonas would want to get away from the Magic Kingdom, but he was recently photographed with Disney character entourage (oh, and his Wife) in celebration of his one year anniversary. You too can have Cinderella on your guest list. Then they’ll know who’s boss.
And if you’re tackling the royal couple, you have to work on your media presence. Television and tabloid news are obsessively reporting every last detail of the royal wedding, betraying not only how wrong they are about our interest in the wedding, but also how wrong they are about audience interest in the medium. If you’re a youtube hit, you’re already ahead. Particularly original ceremonies are great internet fodder.
