Groom speeches, as prescribed by tradition, are not funny. In fact, these are considered as the most serious of all wedding speeches. But how does one add a funny twist to a traditionally serious speech? Here are the dos and don’ts.
Do interject some funny stories into the speech. Even the most irritable person in the world has funny and entertaining experiences. It is, thus, likely that you have your own funny stories to share. So share it. Although there is no one joke that can make everyone in the crowd laugh ’til they cry, there are certain funny anecdotes that can hit your crowd’s funny bone. Do use a funny one liner. One liners are, in general, statements that were made to ensure that some people in the audience would laugh. Also, stay away from sexual references – leave that to your best man – and things that talk of the same thing.
Ready your listeners for the climax of the joke – the punch line. Grooms usually make the mistake of saying the punch line without building enough momentum first. This is because the groom, for his want to make the people laugh, do so prematurely. If it isn’t natural for you as the groom to be extremely funny, try practicing the punch line well but don’t overdo it. The best advise therefore is to be natural – if you’re not funny, try not overdoing it.
Do try to be creative. Present something that your audience has never seen before. The audience often has the ear for original speeches, if yours sound too generic, they’d probably lend their ears to something else. So add color to your speech. Use some materials that are unconventional.
Do try using old jokes, but do so only if you can add a colorful twist to them. Old jokes can still make your audience laugh. One that usually makes people giggling is the one where the groom reads parts of his speech, rips his script off, and say that it was the script from his previous marriage. If you feel that the audience would buy this, crack it. If not, get another one.
Don’t compose an anecdote that never really happened. If you can deliver it in a way that it would not sound like a real-life story, then it’s perfectly fine to make up a fake anecdote. But, if you intend to present it as a real experience, it is advisable that you just pick a real anecdote and give it a good twist. No one ever gets away with a fake anecdote and you would not want to known as an inventor of one.
