TOP BOUQUETS FROM OLYMPIC FLORISTS
The Olympic Games is believed to have started in 776 BC with the tradition of presenting athletes with flowers after their victory said to have started then too. Olympic victors were crowned with a garland of olive, myrtle and date palm stems and it is believed that the olive stems came from the very first wild olive tree which Hercules planted in Ancient Olympia.
The stunning flower arrangements that are presented to modern Olympic winners are far removed from the garlands of old, they are still a potent symbol of humankind’s sporting prowess.
And deciding on the florist who makes the winners’ bouquets is a highly competitive and regulated process. When it comes to choosing the florist – it’s almost like competing in an Olympic event with the contenders having to ensure that their bouquet meets the very strict requirements of the Olympic Committee.
Some of the factors that floral designers have to take into account include using varieties that are native to the area where the Games are to be held and that represent local culture. Other factors include cost, availability, whether the blooms are heavily fragranced and whether they can withstand extreme temperatures. The bouquets also have to last without water for a longer period and can’t have any spiky stems or thorns that could hurt someone. For the 2010 Winter Olympics, 58 florists in British Columbia entered to win the competition to design 1800 bouquets for athletes in both the Olympics and the Paralympic Games. There was a heart-warming side to the story of the two winners of the competition. Some of the designers who worked for the winning florists included rehabilitated prisoners, recovering addicts and victims of violence.
The all-green bouquets for the Vancouver Games included deep green aspidistra leaves, brightly coloured spider mums, green berries of the hypericum plant and monkey grass. It was said that the simple green design reflected the green Canadian countryside and concern for the environment.
And green is the word when it comes to the bouquet for the London Olympics in 2012. The awarding of potted plants is under consideration by organizers as part of the Games’ sustainability agenda.
The bouquet for the 2008 Games in Beijing was very symbolic, and included exact numbers of berries, roses and lilies. The pyramid shaped bouquets stood for hospitality, unity, fairness, luck, smoothness and friendship. Each of the 6 000 bouquets had an identity number to facilitate tracking of the delivery process, and it is said that only eight hours was allowed to elapse between picking the flowers and presentation to the athletes .
The floral bouquets of the Olympics have a colourful and interesting history. From olive branches in Olympia, yellow and white tulips in Lillehammer, eucalyptus, kangaroo paws and grevillias in Sydney, roses in Beijing and azaleas and camellias in Turin, the beautiful bouquets have all been memorable in their own unique way.
