Perhaps unexpectedly, Silver Spring, Maryland is home to a rich and vibrant history. The area’s diverse and unique heritage boasts a wide variety of treasures worth celebrating. Residents of Silver Spring have an incredible opportunity to experience first-hand the history by which they are surrounded, while learning about a place they perhaps never knew existed.
The Real Silver Spring
Silver Spring derives its name from a mica-flecked spring which was first discovered by Francis Preston Blair, an American journalist and politician who subsequently bought much of the surrounding land. Blair built his summer home here, also naming it “Silver Spring.” Acorn Park is believed to be the site of the original spring. Don’t blink or you might miss it—this may be one of the United States’ smallest parks, at only .12 acres. The park may be small, but its quaint murals and acorn gazebo make for a great afternoon alone or with friends and family.
Historic Landmarks
Many structures in downtown Silver Spring are historic landmarks. For example, more than 100 years ago, the Silver Spring Post Office was opened on the west side of Georgia Avenue. This federal building was the first of its kind to be erected in Montgomery County, and one of 1,100 post offices constructed in the United States that featured murals or sculptures commissioned by the U.S. Treasury Department’s Section of Painting and Sculpture. In 1981 the United States Postal Service vacated their building at 8412 Georgia Avenue and moved to a new and larger facility on Second Avenue. A few minutes away on Eastern Ave. is The Blair Mansion Inn, built as a wedding present in the late 19th century. The Mansion Inn’s award-winning restaurant serves lunch and dinner. Looking for an entertaining evening out? The restaurant also hosts murder mystery dinner shows for its more theatrical diners.
Silver Spring Historical Society
The Silver Spring Historical Society creates and promotes awareness and appreciation of their heritage through sponsorship of educational activities and the preservation and protection of historical sites, structures, artifacts and archives. On a monthly basis, The Silver Spring Historical Society partners with Montgomery Preservation Inc. to sponsor an open house at the historic 1945 B&O Railroad Station. Local historic photographs, Silver Spring advertising memorabilia, and a model train display are among the featured artifacts exhibited. The society hosts many other events on a regular basis, including walking tours and books signing. These activities are sure to be enjoyed whether you are a resident of this Maryland community, or just passing through. For those with an avid interest in their community’s history, you can become a member of the society.
